Tioman Island - Tourist Attractions in Malaysia

A Tropical Paradise in the South China Sea
About 36 nautical miles off Malaysia's east coast lies Pulau Tioman or Tioman Island, one of the region's most enchanting holiday spots. Scenic and tranquil, Tioman Island boasts miles and miles of white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, charming villages and friendly people. Its crystal clear waters teem with spectacular marine life and colourful coral gardens. The twin peaks of Gunung Nenek Semukut provide a prominent landmark to this island, reputed to be one of the most beautiful and idyllic in the world.

The Resting Place of a Beautiful Dragon Princess
According to legend, Tioman Island is the resting place of a beautiful dragon princess, Whilst flying from China to visit her prince in Singapore, this beautiful maiden stopped to seek solace in the crystal-clear waters of the South China Sea. Enraptured by the charms of the place, she decided to discontinue her journey. By taking the form of an island, she pledged to offer shelter and comfort to passing travellers.

Tropical Playground for Water Sports Enthusiasts
Tioman Island is an excellent spot for fun-filled water sports activities. You can go scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, snorkelling, boating, water skiing, windsurfing, or enjoy the beauty of undersea gardens by ridding around the island in a glass-bottomed boat.

A Marine Treasure Trove
Tioman Island is a treasure trove of breathtaking marine attractions. Corals, seashells and limpets, thorny sea urchins, colourful seaweeds and anemones, starfish and a myriad of other aquatic wonders are abundant here. The crystal clear waters make scuba diving and snorkelling in Tioman an experience unlike any other. Other neighbouring islands recommended for scuba diving and snorkelling are Chebeh, Tulai, Renggis, Sembilang, Seri Buat and Gut.

Exciting Adventures Amidst The Splendour Of Nature
Tioman Island is the ideal spot for nature lovers, Whether at sea or on land, the wonders of nature that greet you are truly astounding and fascinating. Trek across the verdant hill from Tekek to Juara and enjoy the cool waterfalls cascading over moss-coverad rock formations at Mukut, or take a dip in the warm waters dotted with pastel-coloured reefs. Or head to the Marine Park Centre located between Tekek and Air Batang and swim amidst the various species of fishes.

Anglers' Bountiful Paradise
Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy a bountiful catch at Tioman Island, Just hire a boat for a day, anchor outside the Marine Park limits where fishing is permitted. By dusk, you will have a catch large enough for a sumptuous barbecue on the beach. If you want to try something different and challenging, try your hand at deep-sea fishing. Among the species if fishes and crustaceans found here are groupers, morays, tunas, parrotfish, sea-bass, red snappers, stingrays, plaices, soles, cora trouts, blue marlins, squids, cuttlefish, shrimps, crabs, prawns and lobsters.

A Delightful Respite from the Hustle and Bustle of City Life
When the stress of life's hectic pace gets to you, rejuvenate your mind and body at Tioman Island. Immerse yourself in the quiet and tranquil setting. Relax to the cool, refreshing breeze and soothing waves. Bask in the tropical sun or walk along the shores during sunset to experience the beauty of the island. Popular beaches are found around the villages of Tekek, Genting, Salang, Air Batang and Juara. For golf-lovers, tee off at the 18-hole international-standard golf course set amidst lush tropical greenery. Enjoy the picturesque sight of rustic villages scattered around the island, where the people are charming, friendly and gracious.

Tioman Island is accessible by boat from Mersing town or Tanjung Gemok, Rompin, a journey which takes about 1 to 2 hours. Or one can also take a plane either Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Kuantan. Accommodation comes in the form of delightful wooden chalets on the beach or in luxurious hotel rooms. Whichever is the choice, comfort and hospitality is assured.

Tioman Island - Getting There

By Air
There are 2 locations to depart from to reach Tioman by air, namely Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Tioman can be best accessed by Berjaya Air, with a direct local flight from Subang Airport in Kuala Lumpur. Flights leave daily to Tioman Island from Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport and flights leave daily to Tioman Island from Seletar Airport, Singapore.

By Bus
It is available from all major cities bus terminal with various bus operators.
Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Kuantan

Driving from Johor Bahru or Singapore to Mersing
Drive to Kota Tinggi from Tebrau Highway and proceed your journey to Mersing, a quiet fishing town. The town is approximately 138 km. Well, you will never miss it as you can see the signboard to the town. At Mersing, you need to take a ferry to Tioman Island. There are secured parking spaces at a very cheap rate (around RM5/nights) so you don't have to think about your vehicle safety!

Driving from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing (399 km)
One of the common road to the island is by PLUS highway to the South and exit through Segamat. From Segamat, continue your journey to Kluang and from there you can go to Mersing.

Driving to Mersing is a long ride and frequent travelers can shorten it by following routes:
1. KL - Kuala Pilah ( winding road) - Bandar Muazzam Shah (will exit between Endau & Mersing) - Mersing

2. KL - Kluang - NITAR - Mersing (Using this route, you'll avoid the winding road before reaching Jamaluang)

Both Bandar Muazzam Shah & NITAR are the palm oil plantation estates, thus the traffic is not heavy esp. during the festive seasons.

Advisable to use either routes only for day drive. Normally, I prefer to use Kluang - NITAR route. By the way, there's a small island called Pulau Cawan near Mersing. During low tide u can walk to this island and according to legend there's one nenek kebayan (old witch) residing there.

By Sea
There are several ferry operators from several different locations and travel times depend on where you get on board. Most ferries are modern and well equipped with air-conditioning and video facilities.

Tanjung Gemok to Tioman
United Ferry Ventures operates such a service from Tanjung Gemuk to Tioman. They provide a gated car park, a tourist information center and additional trips for public holidays.

Schedule:
To Tioman
8.00 am and 12.00 pm,

From Tioman 10.00 am and 4.00 pm

The speed ferry seats more people and take only marginally longer and costs RM25. The last boat is about 4:00 p.m. so beware of touts flogging a 24 hour service when they sell you a ticket.

Following the nation's independence from the British in 1957, the park was officially given the name it goes by now.

Fraser's Hill - Malaysia Tourist Attractions

Delight In The Cool Comfort Of A Hilltop Retreat
Fraser's Hill derives its name from one of the more colorful characters in Colonial history, James Louis Fraser, an adventurer and fortune hunter. Stories about his life, included rumors that he managed an opium and gambling den that was frequented by miners. However, in the early 1900's, J.L. Fraser vanished, never to be heard from again. Later, in 1917, a couple of clergymen rediscovered Fraser's Hill on one of their wanderings. Realising its potential as a Colonial hill station, they managed to garner enough support from the authorities to built a road linking the Kuala Lumpur - Bentong / Kuantan Highway to Fraser's Hill.

When the popularity of Fraser's Hill grew, the expatriate community at that time took to building holiday bungalows on the higher slopes to get away from the unbearable heat of the lowlands. Fraser's Hill at one time was the playground of rich miners and planters from the surrounding areas. One of Malaysia's earliest Golf courses was constructed on Fraser's Hill in 1925 by engineer Frank Hemmant. Cool throughout the year at average temperatures of 58'F to 65'F, the attraction of Fraser's Hill as a tourist resort has not diminished through the years.

Today, Fraser's Hill is popular as a site for company retreats and weekends. The golf fanatic will find enough here to occupy his days and non golfers may just decide to while aways their time horseback riding or simply strolling down the picturesque lanes that weave through the green countryside. The fresh mountain air is cool and invigorating and when dusk falls, the mist that blows in brings back memories of a simple, gentle era.

The Gap
The drive up to Fraser's Hill is slow and winding, but the scenic beauty of the surroundings will undoubtedly take your mind off the meandering ascent. Before reaching the summit of Fraser's Hill, you will have to pass through the gap, a section of the road that is only accessible in one direction at a time. As such, the road is open for an hour to traffic heading uphill and vice-versa through the day. It is customary for travelers on route to Fraser's Hill to stop over at the Gap Rest house for tea while waiting for the road to be opened. The rest house also provides accommodation for those who arrive too late at night to make the final ascent to the top Fraser's Hill.

Golfing
One of the coolest and most beautiful courses in Malaysia, De Club Golf at Frazer's promises a challenging 18 holes for the avid golfer. De Club Golf was designed by world-renowned golfer and international consultant Rodger Davis, and features a colonial style clubhouse with tennis courts, food and beverage outlets and other amenities associated with a world class course. Plans have also been drawn up for a hotel and corporate bungalow to be built around the course.

Horseback Ridding
The Paddock at Fraser's Hill provides ponies for novices who would like to experience the pleasures of horseback riding and horses for more proficient riders. Horseback riding is an ideal way to explore Fraser's Hill and there are a number of trails that spiral around the hillside. There is nothing quite like feeling the rocking canters of a horse beneath you as the cool morning air whispers past your face. It is truly and experience you will never forget.

Bird Watching
Fraser's Hill is also a haven for bird-watching with over 270 species of local and migratory birds flocking together here. Each year, the Malaysian Nature Society, in conjunction with the Fraser's Hill Development Corporation organizes the international Bird Race. This event has achieved tremendous success, with participants from all over the world converging at Fraser's Hill to see which team can sight, identify and record the most number of birds as stated in the official checklist. This world-renowned event seeks to promote Fraser's Hill as a bird sanctuary and encourages bird watching as a healthy outdoor activity which can be appreciated by all. Fraser's Hill is fast becoming a centre for bird watching enthusiasts.

Getting There
Fraser's Hill is approximately 104 kilometers away from Kuala Lumpur. There are two alternative routes from the capital city to this quaint hilltop resort.

The first is via the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway, turning off towards Raub and then off to the left again before Raub to arrive at the Gap.

The other route is the scenic old road towards Penang, branching off at Kuala Kubu Baharu before proceeding to the Gap. At the Gap, due to the narrow road, there is a gate which allows for one-way traffic to the summit. This operates from 6.30 am to 7.00 pm and is open for ascending traffic at odd numbered hours and descending traffic at even numbered hours.

If you intend traveling by bus to Fraser's Hill, you will be able to catch it from Pudu Raya bus terminal in kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kubu Baharu. where you will have to take another bus up to Frazer's Hill. The bus traveling up to the summit leaves Kuala Kubu Baharu twice daily, at 8.00 am and 12.00 noon, while the downhill bus leaves Fraser's hill at 10.00 am and 2.00pm.

Taxis traveling direct to Fraser's Hill are also available from Kuala Lumpur.

Cameron Highlands - Tourist Attractions In Malaysia

Cameron Highlands is Malaysia's largest and best-known hill resort. Discovered by, and named after William Cameron, a government surveyor who, in 1885 explored the area by hacking a path up through dense jungle and came across, "A fine plateau shut in by mountains". At 1524m above sea level the area enjoys a cool climate, with temperatures no higher than 20°C and rarely falling below 10°C, a welcome change to the generally oppressive heat and humidity at sea level.

Without doubt the most interesting aspect of a visit to the resort is its tea plantations, the first of which were established in 1929 by John Archibald Russell and belong to the most famous Malaysian tea producer, Boh Tea. The estates are wonderfully manicured and visitors are welcome to view the factory production process and enjoy a cuppa' at the tea shop.

Other interesting places to visit include the numerous vegetable farms dotted all around the area. There are also strawberry farms, flower nurseries, butterfly farms, a challenging 18 hole golf course and for the more adventurous various jungle treks.

The three main highlands towns are Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang with most visitors staying in and around the latter two. Accommodation varies from small inexpensive hotels and guest houses, to self-catering apartments and first class hotels.

Any times of year is suitable for a visit, but try to avoid the main public and school holiday periods as the area can become very busy. It is also best to be prepared for the 2 hour journey from the entry point at Tapah to Tanah Rata, the drive is not steep and is extremely interesting, but the road is quite narrow and very winding, so drive carefully and try to stop occasionally to enjoy the various sights along the way. These include the impressive Lata Iskandar waterfall, amazing tropical vegetation and various Orang Asli (indigenous people) dwellings. Without doubt Cameron Highlands is the place to visit on Peninsular Malaysia.
